Welcome to 2031. Four years have passed since a cataclysmic event in the fall of 2027, known to everyone as the "Great shift".
The world we once knew ceased to exist in a matter of hours. The global financial system collapsed, and the US dollar lost every shred of its value. Today, it serves as nothing more than cheap fuel, burned in metal barrels to keep people warm on the streets.
It was permanently replaced by Bitcoin, which became the world’s sole currency and store of value. Because its total supply is mathematically locked at 21 million units, the price of a single Bitcoin skyrocketed to over six million dollars, creating a ruthless, unforgiving scarcity.
This mutation violently fractured humanity into two distinct castes:
The AV27 (Before 2027): The instant aristocracy of this new era. They represent the rare 5% of the population who owned cryptocurrency before the crash.
The BT-Lates: The overwhelming majority of the population. The former middle class and the traditional elite who trusted the dollar lost absolutely everything. They survive hand-to-mouth, scraping together "Satoshis"—tiny fractions of a Bitcoin—or relying on barter in underground spaces known as the Echo Markets.
Around Washington, D.C., the geography is a perfect mirror of this new order. The elite have barricaded themselves inside the Golden Circle in Arlington.
It is an ecosystem of pure luxury, filled with glass and titanium villas, and sprawling lawns of brilliant green kept alive by underground irrigation systems despite the water scarcity, all protected by flawless security.
Directly across the Potomac River decay the Gray Zones of Anacostia. It is a landscape of ruin where the infrastructure crumbles, the air tastes of ash and wet metal, and even the prestigious National Mall—once the crown jewel of the capital—has been turned into a vast graveyard of tents and plastic tarps sheltering the homeless.
In this world, states and governments are nothing but illusions, theatrical facades stripped of any real power. True control belongs to omnipotent private conglomerates, like the corporate giant Strata-Gem. Having invested massively in cryptocurrency and bought up the nation's debt, Strata-Gem operates from its imposing "Citadel," a complex of black and gold skyscrapers housing a quarter of the global economy. The company now runs the economy, the military, the police, the hospitals, and education, maintaining its suffocating grip through the constant surveillance of swarming drones.
Technology rules daily life with a cruel transparency. Every individual is legally required to wear a Ledgion on their wrist—a biometric bracelet that serves as a digital vault, an ID card, and a leash. The device projects a hologram displaying the wearer's financial balance in real time, making it impossible to hide either your poverty or your wealth. Removing it means disabling it, turning you into a ghost to the system.
Finally, Artificial Intelligence has forced its way into every level of society. The ultra-wealthy AV27 are accompanied by high-performance AI agents that manage their fortunes around the clock, filter their interactions, and monitor their vital signs. For the children of the BT-Lates in the Gray Zones, AI takes the form of falsely warm educational avatars, designed to rewrite history and spread propaganda to raise a generation of citizens who have learned to accept their fate.
